ASKPONY: SADDLES

Q: What’s the difference between a close contact and a normal jumping or dressage saddle? Is one better than the other?

A: A close contact saddle is usually what’s called a monoflap saddle. That means it has only one layer of leather under your leg instead of two, so there’s less bulk between you and your pony. The panels (the padded parts that sit on the pony’s back) are also slimmer, which helps you feel closer to your pony, and that’s where the name ‘close contact’ comes from!

Monoflap saddles were first designed for top-level riders who can balance well and stay in sync with their horse without extra help from deep seats or big knee rolls. Because these saddles don’t have as much built-in support, they’re not always the best choice for riders who prefer the security of a normal saddle.

One important thing to remember: because close contact saddles have less padding touching the pony’s back, the fit has to be exactly right so they stay comfortable. That means regular saddle checks are even more important.

In the end, there’s no ‘best’ type of saddle for everyone. It depends on how you ride, what your pony needs, and what activities you want to do together. Your saddle fitter can help you find the perfect match for you and your pony.
