Q: I’m too scared to compete in my show this weekend. What can I do?
A: First of all, feeling nervous before a show is completely normal – even professional riders get butterflies! The fact that you care about doing well shows how much you love riding, and that’s wonderful.
Here are some things that might help:
Remember why you started riding. You began because you love ponies and enjoy spending time with them. The show is just another chance to have fun together with your pony.
Talk to someone you trust. Share how you’re feeling with your instructor, parents, or a friend who rides. Sometimes just saying it out loud helps, and they might have experienced the same feelings too.
Break it down into small steps. Instead of thinking about the whole show, just focus on one thing at a time – getting your pony ready, warming up, or just enjoying your first class. You don’t have to be perfect!
Practice some calming techniques. Try taking slow, deep breaths, or imagine yourself having a great ride. Some riders even give themselves a little pep talk before they go in the ring.
It’s okay to take things at your own pace. If you’re not ready this weekend, that’s completely fine. There will be other shows. But sometimes, once you get started, you’ll find it’s not as scary as you thought it would be.
Remember: everyone is there to support you. Your pony, your instructor, your family – they’re all on your team. Shows are meant to be fun, and doing your best is always something to be proud of, no matter what.
Give it a go. Don’t put pressure on yourself. You’ve got this! 🐴
NOTE: If you’re feeling really anxious about competing, please talk to your instructor or a trusted adult. They’re there to help you feel confident and have fun!
