Now that you know why flies are such a problem, let’s look at the equipment that can help protect your pony! From fly masks to full sheets, there are lots of options to keep your pony comfortable during fly season.
Fly masks: Protecting your pony’s face
Fly masks are one of the most important pieces of fly protection equipment. They’re made from fine mesh that keeps flies away from your pony’s eyes and face whilst still allowing them to see clearly.
Basic fly masks cover the eyes and upper face. They’re perfect for ponies bothered by house flies around their eyes.
Fly masks with ear covers have mesh sleeves that protect your pony’s ears, too. Many ponies get very bothered by flies crawling into their ears, so these masks are really helpful.
Fly masks with nose covers extend down to cover your pony’s nose and nostrils. These are brilliant for ponies who get flies constantly landing on their muzzles.
Full face masks combine all three features—eye, ear, and nose protection in one mask.
Choosing the right fly mask
Make sure the mask fits properly! It should sit comfortably without rubbing, with enough room over the eyes so it doesn’t touch your pony’s eyeballs. Check for:
- Soft, comfortable edges that won’t rub
- Strong fastenings that won’t come undone easily
- Good visibility through the mesh
- Proper sizing for your pony’s head
Fly sheets: full body protection
Fly sheets (also called fly rugs) cover your pony’s body to protect them from biting flies. They’re made from lightweight, breathable mesh material.
Standard fly sheets cover the body from withers to tail. They’re great for keeping stable flies off your pony’s sides and belly.
Combo fly sheets include an attached neck cover, giving more protection.
Full fly suits cover the body, neck, and sometimes even extend down the legs for maximum protection.
Choosing a fly sheet
Look for sheets that are lightweight and breathable so your pony doesn’t get too hot. UV protection is a bonus—it helps prevent sunburn on ponies with pink skin. Make sure the sheet fits well and won’t slip or rub.
Fly boots and leg wraps
Some ponies get badly bitten on their legs by stable flies. Fly boots are mesh coverings that protect your pony’s lower legs. They’re especially helpful for ponies who stamp constantly due to leg bites.
Ear nets and fringes
If you’re riding during fly season, an ear net or fly fringe attached to your pony’s bridle can help keep flies away from their face and ears whilst you ride.
Tips for using fly gear
- Check equipment daily for rips, loose fastenings, or rubbing
- Remove masks and sheets regularly to check your pony’s skin underneath
- Clean equipment regularly – dirty gear can cause skin problems
- Have spare masks in case one gets damaged
- Some ponies need time to get used to wearing fly gear, so introduce it gradually
What about cost?
Fly protection gear ranges from affordable to quite expensive. You don’t need the most expensive options to get good protection! Start with a basic fly mask and see how your pony does. You can always add more protection if needed.
And, remember, keeping your pony comfortable and healthy is worth the investment!
