BUILDING CONFIDENCE IN THE SADDLE

Feeling nervous about riding is incredibly common – even professional riders had to overcome fear at some point! The good news is that confidence can be built, step by step. Here’s how to transform those butterflies into excitement.

Start with your breathing

When we’re nervous, we tend to hold our breath or breathe very shallowly. This makes us tense, which horses can feel immediately. Practice this simple breathing exercise:

  1. Breathe in slowly for 4 counts
  2. Hold for 4 counts
  3. Breathe out slowly for 6 counts
  4. Repeat 5 times

Practice this on the ground first, then in the saddle when halted. Soon it’ll become automatic when you need to calm down.

Positive visualisation

Before you ride or spend time doing groundwork, take a few minutes to imagine yourself riding confidently and successfully. Picture yourself:

  • Moving in harmony with your pony
  • Handling any situation calmly
  • Sitting tall and relaxed in the saddle
  • Having fun and enjoying the experience

Your brain doesn’t know the difference between a real experience and a vividly imagined one, so this mental practice actually helps build real confidence!

Build trust on the ground first

Confidence in the saddle starts with confidence on the ground. Spend time with your pony just being together – grooming, leading, doing groundwork exercises. The better you know each other, the more you’ll trust each other.

Practice simple exercises like:

  • Leading your pony around obstacles
  • Teaching them to stand still for mounting
  • Backing up when asked
  • Responding to your voice commands

Take baby steps

Confidence isn’t built overnight – it’s built one small success at a time. Don’t feel pressured to progress faster than feels comfortable. If you’re nervous about cantering, spend more time perfecting your trot. If jumping feels scary, focus on poles on the ground first.

Every small achievement is worth celebrating! Did you manage to relax your hands today? That’s progress! Did your pony respond well to your aids? That’s building a partnership!

Focus on what you can control

You can’t control if your pony spooks at a plastic bag, but you can control how you react. Focus on the things you can influence:

  • Your posture and position
  • Your breathing and relaxation
  • How clearly you communicate with your pony
  • Your preparation and planning

Learn from every ride

Not every ride will be perfect, and that’s completely normal! Instead of getting frustrated with difficult rides, try to learn from them:

  • What went well today?
  • What was challenging and why?
  • What would you do differently next time?
  • What did you learn about yourself or your pony?

Remember your ‘Why’

When nerves creep in, remember why you started riding in the first place. Was it the joy of being with horses? The thrill of partnership? The peace you feel in the saddle? Connecting with your deeper motivation can help push through temporary fears.

You’ve got this!

Building confidence takes time, patience, and self-compassion. Be kind to yourself on the tough days, celebrate the good ones, and remember that every single confident rider started exactly where you are now. With time and practice, those nervous butterflies will transform into excited anticipation for your next ride!
