KEEPING AN EYE ON YOUR PONY’S WEIGHT

Winter can be tricky when it comes to your pony’s weight – some ponies lose too much condition when it’s cold, while others (especially native ponies and good doers!) can actually gain weight even in winter.

The best way to check your pony’s weight isn’t by looking at them; it’s by feeling them! Run your hands along their ribs. You should be able to feel the ribs without pressing too hard, but they shouldn’t be sticking out. This is called a body condition score, and your vet or instructor can teach you how to do it properly.

If your pony is wearing a rug when you see them or has a thick coat, it’s easy to miss weight changes because you can’t see their shape as clearly. Make a habit of doing a quick feel-over when you’re grooming, even in winter. Catching changes early means you can adjust their feed before it becomes a problem.
