It can be tempting to keep ponies stabled when the weather is horrible, but most ponies are much happier with time outside, even in winter. Movement keeps their joints supple, helps their gut work properly, and is great for their mental wellbeing; a pony that’s cooped up in a stable all day can become fizzy, bored, or even unwell.
If the field is very wet and muddy, you might need to limit turnout to protect the grass and your pony’s legs. A track system – where ponies walk around a track at the edge of the field rather than standing in the middle – can be a brilliant way to give your pony movement without churning up the ground.
Always check the field for hazards before turning your pony out in winter: broken branches, icy patches near gates, or frozen puddles can all cause injuries. A quick walk around the field only takes a few minutes and could prevent an accident.
