GROWTH RINGS

Growth rings can appear for many reasons and are often misinterpreted by owners as signs of laminitis.

More often, these rings are caused by changes in the grass or concussion from being worked or turned out on hard ground.

If the rings are caused by laminitis, you only really see them after your pony has started to recover, so if you see rings on his feet, try not to panic as long as he’s sound.

Make sure your pony’s feet are trimmed regularly to keep them healthy. This will also give your farrier a chance to monitor the rings on the feet. Your farrier will be the best person to tell you if you need to worry or not!
