GETTING RUGGING RIGHT

If your pony does wear a rug this winter, making sure it fits properly is really important. A badly fitting rug can rub sore patches on your pony’s shoulders, withers, and chest – ouch!

Here’s what to look for when you put your pony’s rug on. The rug should sit just in front of the withers at the front, and reach to the top of the tail at the back. You should be able to slide a flat hand underneath the chest straps without them being too tight or too loose. The leg straps (if it has them) should allow your pony to move freely without the rug slipping sideways, but not so loose they could get caught in them.

Check your pony’s rug every single day – rugs can slip, straps can twist, and the weather can change overnight. A rug check only takes a minute and can save your pony a lot of discomfort.
